Cyndi's List The source for reputable online genealogy sources.
New York Historical Society Their massive holdings include manuscripts, newspapers, city directories, maps and photographs.
New York Public Library Their holdings include city and telephone directories, vital records indices, local history, federal and state censuses, passenger lists and church records.
George Sim Johnston Archives Part of the New York City Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Their records cover New York City 1875-1950 and the Bronx, west of the Bronx River, 1875-1916. There is a fee to request a search, plus an additional fee per hour to compile the records. Be sure to read the information page carefully!
Rootsweb Mailing Lists Free subscription of online mailing lists for any locality within New York State.

New Netherland Project This organization was formed by the New York State Library, National Endowment for the Humanities and Friends of New Netherland. Their goal is complete transcription, translation and publication of all Dutch documents pertaining to New Netherland.
American Colonists' Library: Primary Sources An impressive collection of links to online sources of literature, history, culture, etc. Covers the 17th and 18th centuries.
